Not many of the extended wheelhouse, raised foredeck and fully enclosed self-bailing cockpit versions of the Mitchell 28 were built. Topsides gel coat still polishes up as if new. All round heavy duty rubber D fendering adds to the ruggedness and quality of this model.
She punches way above her weight in heavy seas and I have never stuffed the bow, even in 2.5meter waves. You can read more about this in the article section on my website www.coast2coastmedia.co.uk, as well as many other adventures in this boat.
She is a great cruising boat and I explored Brittany, the Channel Isles, the Scillies and the West Country in her from my base in Emsworth. When you see the maintenance and fitting out these have all been too the highest standard.
The twin 125 Yanmar 4JH3 DTE engines are solid and reliable starting first time providing a steady & reassuring rumble from its fully sound-proofed compartment. They give a maximum speed of 18knots and cruise happily at 3000rpm at a speed of 13knots. When cruising the use about 25L an hour.
The Lightening Interceptors reduce pitch, roll, list and turn list. They even have underwater lights! New prop shafts and couplings along with servicing the stern glands was done in 2023. There is a full service record for the engines from new.
The instrumentation has been brought up to date with a new chart plotter, radar, AIS, battery monitor, exhaust temperature alarm, fog horn, LED lights, interceptor monitor, OLAS MOB, and the existing autopilot, Bidata dispaly, DSC radio.
In the wheelhouse there are 4 sliding windows on either side and opening windows fore & aft. There is a dining area with a table that can seat 4. There are separate forward facing seats for the helm and navigator. In the fore cabin there is a large hatch
There are two full size V berths forward with an infill that makes a comfortable double bed with another berth for one big person or two children in the wheelhouse.
The heads has a manual Jabsco toilet and a stainless sink with H&C water, from the calorifier or immersion heater.
The galley has a sink/drainer with H&C as well as a fresh water tap. There is a 2 ring gas hob with grill and oven. There is a truly massive amount of storage for everything in the galley.
Outside in the cockpit there is a further helm position and a folding standing platform that converts into a table, along with a deck mounted table.
There are three large solar panels so the domestic and port engine starter batteries never run out of power, and a smaller (removable) solar panel for the starboard engine battery.

The hull is robustly made of GRP with great attention to detail. Inside there is fantastic hand made joinery. The inside fit out has been carefully thought out not just for optimum function but also so it is easy to get at pipework, cabling etc by removing floor panels. Even the port engine (see survey reports) can be easily accessed by removing three panels. Indeed, the mechanic last time the engines were serviced reckoned he could get into the space.
Outside there is a little teak, but the decks have non slip tread master. All of the fittings are chunky stainless steel.
Davits can be fitted to the transom and used to support a rigid or inflatable tender.
The hull has been copper coated

If you are a traditionalist, like backup or for when it all goes wrong: There is a steering compass and a chart store. The chart store is in the roof of the wheelhouse and folds down making it very easy to use charts etc.
There is also a rear helm position. This has throttle and gear controls plus a Raymarine Bidata display and a bow thruster control.
There is a standing platform if you want to use the stern helm for forward navigation. This can also be used as a cockpit table with the plastic extension fitted to it.
There are several covers in the cockpit.
Two Yanmar 4JH3 DTE engines are installed the port engine has 779 h and the starboard 772 h. Maintenance records are available from new.

When I bought her she need the stern glands overhauling, like most things in a boat this was not straightforward. New prop shafts and couplings along with servicing the stern glands was done in 2023. At this time the rope cutters were also serviced.
Interceptor Lightenings
This is the new range from Humphree. They have an integral fast acting motor. They come with Pitch Control, Autolist, Roll reduction and turn control. In addition they also have underwater lights with a built in with a colour wheel.
There are separate rudder sensors and GPS aerial for them.
There is a Vetus electric bow thruster which is very effective.
There is a life raft fitted onto the roof of the wheelhouse. Please note it does not have any pyrotechnic flares in it. Instead it has an electronic visual distress signal (LED flare) and spare batteries. It is in service.
To get onto the top of the wheel house for the life raft or maintenance there are folding steps on the stud side.
An additional hand rail has been fitted at the front of the wheelhouse.
In the forward cabin the bow thruster compartment has a fire port in case the electrical system around the bow thruster catches fire.
Should the hydraulic steering fail there is an emergency handle.
If you loose any of the keys spares are available. There are 3 door keys
