MEREWIF - Sovereign 32 Class Yacht
This class was designed by Kim Holman in 1963 and two were built for the 1964 season, Hull no 1 was LIBRAE built for a Mr Foster. MEREWIF was hull No.2. There were about eight built the last one in 1971. (Information from Mr David Cooper of Holman & Pye, West Mersea)
Merewif's 1st appearance is in Lloyds Register 1965.

Merewif appears each year from 1965 to 1973 under the same ownership and details until 1974 Lloyds Owner: Gowen, Sailmakers of West Mersea.

In 1972 Merewif was purchased by Mr and Mrs Cady from Mr. Wildy, the original owner, and for two years sailed her throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. They have been kind enough to send me a wealth of information, documents and photographs of Merewif and their voyage around Europe including information about Mr Wildy the first owner. photographs show that Merewif started life with red topsides which explains why there is a red main and mizzen in the boat.

Merewif was designed and built in 1964 and known to be one of the first two built it may explain why the boat came into the possession of Gowen’s as Kim Holman the designer lived at West Mersea and had purchased shares in Gowen's. Mr Cooper (above) states that whilst in the possession of Gowens the boat was sailed by Mr Paddy Hare the managing director with the help of Brigadier Jack Elliston a close friend of Kim Holman. Sometime in the early 80’s Merewif was purchased from Mr Heathfield by a Mr Tim Bushell who owned the boat for a few years before selling it on to a Mr Peter Buckmaster. Mr Bushell has kindly supplied me with all the original drawings and written specifications for Merewif . Full details of the build and rigging are shown and are included in the sale. In 1993 it was in the ownership of Capt. Robert Brown OBE RN who had sailed Merewif to the south coast and lived on her for two years in Eastney (now Southsea) Marina. Later Merewif returned to the east coast in the ownership of a Mr D Skinner. In 1996 the boat was sold to a Mr Peter Deakan of Stratford on Avon. Merewif purchased from Mr Deakan in March 2015.
For the past 18 years Merewif has been laid up under cover at Harry Kings Boatyard, Pinmill, Ipswich during which time the following work and has taken place: - Keel dropped and re-bedded with new keel bolts. New teak deck laid deck. Fitted with new four cylinder Beta Engine 37.5 bhp, shaft, bearings and propeller. (Total running time 22 hours.) Coach roof re-glassed and painted, new fore-hatch, new water-tank (preformed plastic), new Jabsco Toilet. New main and Mizzen masts and booms, new stainless steel tabernacle, both masts have new fittings and rig. New furling genoa gear. The following brand new and unused sails collected from the sailmakers Gowens where they have been stored since manufacture:- Main sail, Mizzen, furling genoa, storm jib, trysail, two part stacking type sail covers for main and mizzen.(all in white) Included with these sails are used blue sail covers in good order and used Main and Mizzen (Red) sails both in good order.
Merewif has been restored to near new condition, all planking and other wood work thoroughly checked and found in good order by qualified shipwright who also rebuilt the chart table and engine cover. All paint and varnish work inside and out re-done, all necessary repairs completed (all minor). All deck fittings refitted, new where necessary, new pushpit and pulpit in 316 stainless steel fitted, new gas locker made.
Two new batteries fitted, new wiring, new switch panels with circuit breakers. New LED navigation lights. New internal LED lights The original cushions are vinyl covered and are clean and serviceable but will at some time, require replacing. Other than that Merewif will be sold as a bare boat for the purchaser to fit out with fixtures, fittings and navigational equipment of choice at his/her expense either as a D.Y.I. project or by own contractors.
The advertised price is less than the cost of the new engine, masts, booms, sails and rig.
I offer the following: Near new 37.5 beta engine with gear box prop and shaft value in excess of £8000, 5 new Gowen sails and 2 boom sail catchers, value in excess of £8000, new unused teak deck, hand laid in strips, cost today £10,000. New masts rigging and furling gear value in excess of £6,000. Brand new hand made to fit stainless pushpit and pulpit cost in excess of £2000. New toilet, water tank, electric bilge pump, 2 hand bilge pumps, new led wiring, cabin and navigation lights value £1000 plus. All of which adds up to £35,000, all together within or on a timber hull which today would cost at least £50,000 to purchase even if it were possible to have it made.
This is a one off opportunity to purchase all the above for the reduced advertised price.
Merewif has been tested in the water over a period of two months without any leaks. The engine is running as a new engine should and the boat handles well under power and sail.
Merewif is responsive to the rudder and handles easily under sail. She is a great boat built to cross the Atlantic. Anyone wanting to own and sail a classic wooden boat at a very reasonable price will not find a better one.
Merewif is as near to a new boat as is possible and is now almost ready to go to sea subject to new owners requirements and fitting out. Running back stays for the Mizzen can be fitted and are on the boat if required. Other work can be done to new owners requirements in agreement with Harry king & Sons Ltd Pin Mill Ipswich where the vessel is laid up for the winter.
Up date 1st November 2018 Merewif has received a number of coats of varnish to all exterior wood forming the toe rails, sides of cockpit and coach roof. The topsides have been sanded and given two layers of undercoat and a final coat of gloss. New taps have been fitted to the fuel tanks, fuel filters changed and the engine and gearbox oil renewed. She is now laid up in the yard and covered up for the winter after winterisation procedures.
